19 July 2026 In the Heart of The Alpujarras

Featuring

RICK [TARIQ] LEEUWESTEIN

Rick [Tariq] Leeuwestein was born in 1985 in Besançon and lives in Hoorn, the Netherlands. He studied Tourism and completed a long internship in Andalusia in 2005. During this period, he developed a great love for this unique southern Spanish region. Somewhere he was seized by a mysterious force – the soul of Al-Andalus – in this almost North-African part of Europe.

MOHAMED AHADDAF

Mohamed Ahaddaf, an oud prodigy, was born in 1975 in the picturesque city of Tétouan, in the heart of enchanting musical melodies. His precocious talent earned him the honor of representing the city of Tétouan in a national competition broadcast on national television. His performance brought him both local and national acclaim. He set about modernizing the Moroccan Andalusian school, skilfully fusing its sounds with jazz, giving birth to an innovative genre: Andalusian Moroccan jazz. He has released four albums in the course of his career.

EMAD GHAJJOU

Emad Ghajjou was born in Tétouan, Morocco and grew up in an artistic family. Andalusian, Sufi and classical Arabic music formed the base of his musical education. Later, he studied Andalusian music at the Tétouan Conservatory.

Emad has been performing ever since, working with many different artists and in a variety of styles and genres.

For nearly eight centuries, Al-Andalus was home to one of the most remarkable civilizations of medieval Europe. Muslims, Jews and Christians contributed to a flourishing culture of science, philosophy, architecture, music and spirituality. Following the fall of Granada in 1492 and the expulsion of Muslims and Jews from the Iberian Peninsula, thousands found refuge across North Africa. Many settled in Morocco, where they preserved their traditions while becoming an integral part of Moroccan society. Today, their descendants continue to carry this unique Andalusian heritage.

Children of Al-Andalus documents these living traditions through personal stories, photography and film, revealing a cultural memory that has survived for more than five centuries.
